Sticking and dragging doors are usually caused by loose hinge screws, a settled frame, or seasonal swelling. The correct fix depends on which: longer screws into framing, shimming a hinge, adjusting the strike, or planing and refinishing the edge. Guessing produces a door that binds again in three months.

Doors that will not latch almost always need strike plate adjustment rather than a new latch. We reposition or enlarge the strike opening and, where the gap is significant, reset the plate with proper backing.

Sliding glass doors fail at the rollers and the track. Worn rollers drag, and a bent or pitted track destroys new rollers quickly. We replace roller assemblies, clean or cap tracks, adjust panel height, and replace failed weatherstripping so the door glides with one finger again.

Frames, jambs, and thresholds take the abuse: rot at the bottom of exterior jambs, split jambs from forced entry or heavy use, worn thresholds that leak air and water, and damaged casing. We repair or replace these sections and correct the drainage detail that caused the damage.

Pre-hung interior doors are the most common installation. Correct installation is about the frame, not the door: plumb the hinge jamb, shim behind every hinge, set consistent reveals top and sides, and confirm the door holds position at any angle before casing goes on.

Exterior doors add weatherproofing, sill pan flashing, insulation of the rough opening, and correct lockset and deadbolt alignment for security. A poorly installed exterior door costs money in energy loss every day it remains.

Specialty doors — barn doors with wall-mounted track and blocking, pocket doors with concealed hardware, French and double doors requiring precise coordination between panels, and closet bypass or bifold systems — all get hardware anchored into real framing rather than drywall.
