Deck Repair Services

Board replacement, railing repair, refinishing, and rebuilds that make outdoor space safe again

A deck is the only part of a home that is structural, load-bearing, fully exposed to weather, and stood on by everyone you invite over. KW Handyman Nationwide repairs decks, porches, balconies, and docks: replacing rotted boards, tightening and rebuilding railings, repairing joists and posts, and refinishing surfaces so they last through another set of seasons instead of another single summer.

What Deck Repair Actually Involves

Most deck repair calls start with a visible symptom: a spongy board, a wobbly railing, a splintered stair tread, a section that has faded to gray. The visible symptom is rarely the whole story. Before quoting, we probe the joists, check the ledger connection to the house, inspect fasteners for corrosion, look at post bases where they meet concrete or soil, and check flashing. That inspection determines whether you need a two-hour repair or a partial rebuild.

Surface repairs cover deck boards, stair treads, fascia, and skirting. We replace damaged boards with matching pressure-treated, cedar, or composite material, using hidden fasteners or matched screw patterns so the repair does not read as a patch.

Structural repairs cover joists, beams, ledger boards, posts, and footings. This is the work that determines whether a deck is safe to stand on. Sistering weakened joists, replacing rotted post bases with standoff hardware, and re-flashing a ledger are the three repairs most likely to prevent a collapse.

Refinishing covers cleaning, sanding, stripping old failed coatings, and applying stain or sealer. Refinishing on top of rotted or loose boards is money wasted, which is why we always repair first and finish second.

Common Deck Problems and Their Causes

Rot begins where water cannot escape: under planters, between tight board gaps packed with debris, at the base of posts, and behind ledger boards without flashing. Sun, snow, salt air, and freeze-thaw cycles all accelerate it, and every climate has its own worst offender.

Loose railings are the most dangerous defect we find. Railings are frequently attached with lag screws into the rim joist alone, which loosens over time. We rebuild connections with through-bolts and tension hardware so the railing resists real lateral load.

Popped nails, cupped boards, and protruding screws are usually a fastener choice problem. Nails back out with seasonal movement; we replace them with coated structural screws. Cupped boards were typically installed with the grain facing the wrong way or without adequate drying time.

Fading and graying are cosmetic, but the moment the finish fails the wood begins absorbing water and the timeline to real damage shortens dramatically.

Residential and Commercial Deck Work

Homeowners typically call before an event, before selling, or after a board finally gives way. We can usually stabilize immediately and complete the full repair on a scheduled visit, and we always tell you which items are safety issues and which can wait a season.

Commercial clients — restaurants with outdoor seating, apartment communities with unit balconies, hotels, marinas, and HOAs — need documentation as much as they need repair. We provide condition reports with photos, prioritized repair lists, and phased scheduling so a patio does not close during peak hours.

Why Choose KW Handyman Nationwide for Deck Repair

We inspect structure before we quote, and we tell you when a repair is not worth doing. If a deck's framing is at the end of its life, a rebuild is often cheaper over five years than a chain of repairs, and we will say so directly.

Our teams are insured, our work is warrantied, and our scheduling is transparent from booking to walkthrough. Nationwide coverage means the same inspection standard whether your deck faces coastal salt air, mountain snow load, or desert UV.

FAQ

Deck Repair Services FAQ

Most decks need resealing every one to three years depending on sun exposure, rainfall, and traffic. Decks in harsh sun or coastal air are at the short end of that range.
